10 Foods Most Likely to Cause Cancer

Almost everyday in our life, we consume if not exposed to foods most likely to cause cancer. Most of us have  a few these foods on our menu, but if you combine some of them, you’ll get a deadly combo and you need to start making changes to your diet.

While you’re at it, be sure to check out our article on Paleo diet, a diet based on the types of foods presumed to have been eaten by early humans, consisting chiefly of meat, fish, vegetables, and fruits.

Canned Tomatoes

The lining of most canned foods are made with bisphenol-A, or BPA. Even minuscule exposures to BPA increase the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, infertility, early puberty, metabolic disorders and type-2 diabetes, according to the Breast Cancer Fund. But tomatoes are exceptionally dangerous because of their high acidity, which causes BPA to leach from the lining of the can into the fruit.

Tip: Use fresh tomatoes when you cook or prepare them ahead of time and store them in glass containers.

Sugar

If you have a sweet tooth, there are much healthier ways to satisfy your cravings. Sugar is highly addictive, and other than spiking your glucose levels and creating fat, it can lead to heart disease. Avoid sugar as much as you can to decrease the risk of diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, and much more. Enjoy a bowl of fruit or add honey to your recipes instead of sugar.

Hydrogenated Oils

Hydrogenated oils contain excessive amount of omega-6 fatty acids, which can cause heart disease and increase the risk of  skin cancer. The body needs some omega-6s, but they should be balanced with omega-3s; wall nuts, chia seeds, salmon, mackerel and grass-fed meats are good sources of omega 3. Use heart-healthy olive oil or coconut oil, which are unrefined.

Processed Meat

Meat loaf, sausages, bacon, prosciutto—these processed meats contain assorted chemicals including sodium nitrates, which make them look fresh but can become carcinogenic when exposed to high levels of health.

The WHO advised that consuming 50g of processed meat a day – equivalent to just a couple of rashers of bacon or one hotdog – would raise the risk of getting bowel cancer by 18% over a lifetime which make processed meat listed under foods most likely to cause cancer.

Margarine

Margarine is one of the unhealthiest food in our diet. It is primarily made with hydrogenated vegetable oils and it’s more unnatural than you think. The trans fats present in margarine can damage your heart, blood vessels, and mess up your cholesterol levels.  Switch to healthy alternatives such as olive butter, almond butter or even pumpkin puree.

White Bread

“Since white bread is low in fiber and protein that helps to slow digestion, it is absorbed rapidly in our system. This leads to blood sugar’s rising quickly,” says Palinski-Wade.

Alcohol

After tobacco use, alcohol abuse is the leading cause of cancer. Although it’s true that a moderate or low amount of alcohol can actually reduce heart-disease risk, overindulgence can result in heart failure and stroke. And cancer. In a meta-study, experts working for the World Health Organization concluded that excessive alcohol use is the main cause of mouth, esophagus, liver, colon, mouth, rectum and female breast cancers.

Chips

Chips are typically high in fat and calories, which can raise the risk of weight gain and obesity. One ounce of plain potato chips, contains about 10 grams of fat and 154 calories.

Being overweight or obese raises the risk of diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. This makes potato chips on the top list of foods most likely to cause cancer.

Saturated Fat

Eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood. High levels of LDL cholesterol in your blood increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. As you get older, try to decrease your consumption of foods high in saturated fats, such as highly-processed snacks made with vegetable oils, fatty meats, processed cheeses, and butter-based desserts. These are foods most likely to cause cancer.

Barbecued Meats

The smell of barbecue might be hard to resist, but please try. The chemicals that enter the meat when you grill them cause pancreatic and breast cancer. If you can’t resist, try to limit the intake of barbecued meat. You may also consider adding some rosemary to your hamburger to reduce the amount and number of carcinogens.
